JAN GARBAREK GROUP

FT. TRILOK GURTU

WATCH FILM

Alongside his group featuring Trilok Gurtu, the famous jazz saxophonist, Jan Garbarek, returns to Sani Festival this summer after many years away. Ever evolving throughout his illustrious career, the Norwegian virtuoso has always sought new and different sounds. From the musical traditions of his own country to improvisational medieval modes, Middle Eastern rhythm and world jazz, he has searched to find the ‘common language’, as he describes it, to ‘suit the tone, texture and feeling of each different music’. This unerring curiosity is clearly present in the artist’s life motto: “nothing ever stands still. And at no point must you claim, ‘yes, now I've got somewhere’”. Though in some ways Garbarek very much has, being one of the most important artists of his instrument.

Over the years, the technical master has worked with many greats, including Keith Jarret, Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti, Gary Peacock, John McLaughlin, Jon Abercrombie and the Hilliard Ensemble, as well as with our very own Eleni Karaindrou.

Playing the saxophone with sensitivity and tenderness, Jan Garbarek with his group featuring Trilok Gurtu will wow Sani Hill with an unforgettable night of musical virtuosity and artistic excellence like no other this summer, as they delight with a night of jazz and music of the world.
